Human-AI Teaming in Healthcare: A Systems-Level Analysis of Distributed Situation
Awareness.


Riley Thomson is a PhD candidate at the University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC), focusing
on Human-AI teaming in healthcare.

Supervised by Professor Prof Paul Salmon and Dr Jolene Cox, his research will explore how artificial intelligence agents can be integrated safely and effectively into clinical environments through a systems-level approach. The project aims to identify and model risks at a systems-based level.
Riley earned his Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) at UniSC, and completed his honours
thesis with the centre in 2024 investigating healthcare stakeholders’ perceptions of large
language models (LLMs) in clinical workflows. His academic achievements include First
Class Honours, a University Medal for Academic Excellence, and a Student Leadership
Award.
His research interests include artificial intelligence, large language models, sociotechnical
systems, and ethics. Riley aims to contribute to the deployment of AI in healthcare, ensuring
safe, adaptive, and human-centred care.
